The Auckland Policy Office
The Auckland Policy Office is a central city location for government in Auckland it provides an opportunity for agencies to work together to address the most challenging issues faced by Auckland now and in the future.
The role of the Auckland Policy Office
The Auckland Policy Office (APO was first established in 2005. The then Ministry of Economic Development (now part of MBIE) recognised that Auckland was becoming more important for New Zealand. A group of four agencies set up a shared office where they could work together on Auckland related issues requiring cross-agency collaboration.
Since that time, the APO has grown to include nine government agencies located in the office. Other agencies have established a formal relationship which allows them to connect with the APO.
In response to Doug McKay’s 2014 report “Review of Central Government Policy, Implementation, Strategy and Leadership Effectiveness in Auckland”, the State Services Commissioner established and appointed the role of Deputy Commissioner, Auckland. The State Service Commission assumed leadership if the from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment in 2015.
Being part of the office provides agencies:
- a community in which to share and coordinate policy
- a facility where connections can be fostered and government can connect with the needs of Auckland and its communities, and
- a system wide view of Auckland for central government.
Being in Auckland and understanding the needs and challenges of the city in the context of New Zealand as a whole is the first step towards a better understanding of Auckland and its needs.

- Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment
- Ministry for the Environment
- Ministry of Justice
- Ministry for Pacific Peoples
- Ministry of Social Development
- Ministry of Transport
