Better Public Services Result 9 - Case Study: R9 Accelerator 2.0
Innovative, customer-centric service design in action
The R9 Better for Business programme launched the first R9 Accelerator process for government in April 2015 (R9 Accelerator 1.0) as a way to trial how private sector can work with government on challenges which impact business.
The purpose of the R9 Accelerator is to assist with generating, driving and implementing innovative ideas between government agencies and the private sector in a collaborative way. The programme uses a co-design approach to help address major pain points for New Zealand businesses.
Finding solutions to these pain points is assisting R9 agencies to achieve the Result 9 targets.
Better for Business Programme General Manager Andrew Bardsley says using the R9 Accelerator has made it possible to undertake a radically new approach to the way government normally sources and procures innovative solutions to problems.
Incorporating learnings from Accelerator 1.0, the second R9 Accelerator (2.0) got underway in early 2016.
After 14 weeks of acceleration, seven teams pitched concepts at Demo Day on 2 June 2016. Of the seven who pitched, five teams gained funding to enable them to continue into the due diligence stage, and define and negotiate a proposal to develop their prototype solution to help New Zealand business.
"We're very pleased that all five teams are nearly all the way through the eight week post Demo Day due diligence phase with many having already achieved verbal or contracted commitments from government agency investors. This shows that lessons learned from R9 Accelerator 1.0 have meant a higher quality of Minimum Viable Products in our second iteration," says Mr Bardsley.
Two teams who weren't ready to pitch at Demo Day are also continuing to work with agencies. R9 Accelerator continues to support these teams.
"We plan to promote the accelerator concept to more government agencies outside of the nine directly involved in the Result 9 programme," Mr Bardsley says, "providing them with an alternative way to procure private sector services that will help reduce the effort of dealing with government."
The Result 9 Better for Business programme has partnered with Creative HQ to deliver accelerator services. Creative HQ operates as a not for profit enterprise which is fully owned by the Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency (WREDA), and governed by an independent Board of Directors. It is supported by WREDA, Callaghan Innovation and private investors.
