When something is wrong, we need to know


You will be aware that the Minister of State Services recently announced that work is underway to review the Protected Disclosures Act 2000.

The Government is exploring whether the law and procedures to protect whistle blowers are working effectively.

I’ve been saying for some time that people, in the public and private sector, must be able to raise issues of suspected wrong-doing safely and confidently - without fear of punishment or reprisal with confidence.

New Zealand’s Public Service is internationally recognised as one of the world’s most trustworthy. It’s important we maintain these high standards.

In a blog I wrote last year I said speaking up isn’t just about fraud or criminal wrong-doing. Public Servants should speak up about anything that doesn’t seem right so it can be looked into and dealt with.

In short, when something is wrong we need to know.

But when people raise issues, they need to know they can do so safely, supported by a process that is clear, easy to understand and simple to access. That is why last year I issued new model standards for State Sector agencies to follow.
