State Services Commissioner Iain Rennie has today advised that Katrina Casey will become the Acting Secretary for Education and Chief Executive of the Ministry of Education.

Ms Casey will take up the role on 4 July 2016 when the current Secretary for Education, Peter Hughes CNZM, becomes the State Services Commissioner. 

Ms Casey is currently the Ministry of Education’s Deputy Secretary Sector Enablement and Support. She was appointed to this role in July 2012.

Prior to this, Ms Casey was General Manager Community Probation Services at the Department of Corrections. Katrina joined Corrections as General Manager Strategic Development when it was formed as a new Department in 1995. She had previously worked in the Inland Revenue Department and the Ministry of Works and Development.

Ms Casey holds a Bachelor of Science from Canterbury University and a Masters in Regional and Resource Planning (with Distinction) from Otago University.

The State Services Commission will commence the process to recruit a permanent Secretary for Education in the near future.
