The State Services Commissioner, Iain Rennie, today announced the appointment of Colin MacDonald to the position of Chief Executive and Secretary for Internal Affairs, Department of Internal Affairs.

Mr MacDonald is currently the Chief Executive of Land Information New Zealand (LINZ).  He has held this position since May 2008.

“Colin MacDonald has more than 30 years’ experience in the public and private sectors in New Zealand and the United Kingdom.  During his term at LINZ he led the cross-government programme for data and information re-use, developed and implemented the high country land policy, and established LINZ as the leader of the geospatial sector.

“Colin has demonstrated the ability to successfully lead and implement major IT projects in operational and service delivery organisations.  His extensive ICT experience will assist him to lead the State sector in this area and to prioritise and initiate effective cross-government projects,” Iain Rennie said.  

Prior to his role at LINZ, Mr MacDonald was the Deputy Commissioner, Business Development and Systems at Inland Revenue Department.  Before joining IRD, Mr MacDonald was the Chief Operating Officer for the ANZ Banking Group (New Zealand) Limited.  On migrating to New Zealand in 1994, Mr MacDonald joined KPMG holding the positions of Senior Consultant and Associate Director.

Mr MacDonald has a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Glasgow.  He is a Chartered Engineer and a Member of the British Computer Society.

Mr MacDonald starts his five year term on 16 April 2012.

Sue Gordon will be Acting Chief Executive, LINZ, from when Mr MacDonald takes up his appointment.
