‘Don’t ask me to repeat the same information over and over again’ is a common complaint and one of the top ten pain points for businesses dealing with government.

The New Zealand Business Number (NZBN) - a key initiative of the Better for Business programme aims to help make that process easier.

NZBNs are unique identifiers assigned to businesses in New Zealand. Their use will reduce the time and energy businesses spend providing government the same information in different ways. In the future government systems will be linked in such a way that a change to NZBN information will one databases will change information on another.

For example, just one phone call is all it will take to change your mailing address with all the government departments you interact with.

At the moment all companies registered in New Zealand have NZBNs.  By 2017 all businesses, including unincorporated entities will be able to have them.

In the meantime businesses and government are already using the NZBN in innovative ways.

For instance Air New Zealand is using the NZBN as part of the self – service registration process for its Airpoints™ for Business programme.

Air New Zealand built the NZBN and company name into the registration process for Airpoints™ for Business and use data from the Companies Office to validate and complete registration automatically.  This has completely automated a previously manual system making it faster and easier for businesses and Air New Zealand.

This is just the start, we’re already looking for more ways to use the NZBN to make interacting with government easier.
