Strengthening leadership is a workstream in the Better Public Services programme and is responsible for driving an important change. It is about ensuring public sector leaders are accountable for making sure the services delivered really do matter and will make a difference to the lives of New Zealanders.
Making this happen requires more than a change to ‘what’ we do. It requires a significant change in the ‘way’ we do it. This includes the culture of our public sector – how we think, what we believe and how we live our organisational values. The key to success in this area is having good leadership - one that is group based, where people are enabled to think beyond themselves and their individual agencies. To deliver better public services, leaders are encouraged to work collaboratively in order to find innovative solutions to benefit the New Zealand public and businesses.
