Statistics New Zealand (Tatauranga Aotearoa) is New Zealand’s official data and statistics agency. With a vision of unleashing the power of data and changing lives, Tatauranga Aotearoa enables data-led innovation across society, the economy and the environment.

Tatauranga Aotearoa collects information from people and organisations through censuses and surveys, and publishes insights and data about New Zealand. The accessibility of insights and data it generates are critical to decision-making, effective democracy, and accountability from a national to individual level. The Government Statistician and Chief Executive (Government Statistician) holds a three-fold leadership role:

  • As Government Statistician, they lead New Zealand’s national statistics office as the Government’s principal advisor on statistical matters.
  • As Chief Executive, they lead and manage Tatauranga Aotearoa as a high-performing organisation of over 1,000 staff that is responsible for providing data, statistics and insights that inform the Government and New Zealand society.
  • As Government Chief Data Steward they lead the Public Service system’s data and analytics capability, realising the full potential of data as a system asset. 

We are looking for a highly experienced leader to be the next Government Statistician. The role requires outstanding organisational management and leadership skills, coupled with the technical credibility required to operate as the Government’s principal advisor on statistical matters. Working as part of the State Sector Leadership Team requires a collaborative and externally-orientated leadership style, ensuring Tatauranga Aotearoa works closely, effectively and inclusively with communities, businesses, NGOs and public service organisations across New Zealand.

Introducing recommendations from the Independent Review of the 2018 Census will be an important early objective.  It is essential to the success of Tatauranga Aotearoa that it engages with iwi and organisations representing Māori interests, as well as other communities such as the LGBTQI, disabled, Pacific and ethnic communities.   

Excellent leadership by Public Service chief executives is essential to high performing departments and a high performing Public Service.  Chief executives are required to work collaboratively in a spirit of service and strive towards the overall goal of a system of world class, professional State Services, serving the Government of the day, and meeting the needs of all New Zealanders.
